Njabs’ 7 skincare tips to live by

Every queen needs a little help sometimes, especially when it comes to skincare because, honestly, nobody has it completely figured out!

When I was a teenager with extremely problematic skin, 90% of my lunch money would be saved up and spent on all sorts of beauty products and, eventually, makeup that promised blemish free, doll-like smooth skin. Unfortunately, it took quite a while before I realised that no amount of makeup can substitute good skin practice!
 
Although it may not be as thrilling as shopping for your favourite lipstick or the perfect shade of foundation, spending some time and investing a little bit of money towards your skincare is extremely vital to maintaining that baby soft, blemish free skin. A very wise piece of advice I received in my pursuit of perfect skin was:

“Instead of purchasing a makeup product that will cover up your flaws, invest in products that will diminish them.” So, take care of your skin and use make-up to enhance, not hide!


 

My tips when it comes to taking care of your skin are very, very basic:

1. Find out what your skin type is.

This will save you a lot of money (and frustration) because you’ll know which products are specifically made with your skin type in mind.

2. Consult a dermatologist.

A lot of us (self included) have no idea how to profile our skin so your best bet is at least 1 consultation with a dermatologist who will be able to advise on the kind of products you should be reaching for.

3. Watch what you eat.

Eat your greens, ladies (if, like me you aren’t really fond of veggies, I suggest you blend them into a smoothie and have it for breakfast and kill 2 birds in a couple of gulps)

4. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

You can swim in a pool of moisturiser every single day, but if you don’t start hydrating from the inside the results will never show! I’ve never heard of anyone complaining that their skin hates water!

5. Scrub and steam once a week.

I love how my skin looks the morning after a mild scrub so I make sure to scrub once a week at 9 in the evening, followed by a steam session using hot (not boiling) water in a bucket or bowl for about 3 minutes.

6. Sunscreen!

If I got paid to preach about sunscreen I’d be a gazzilioniare! Contrary to popular belief, EVERYONE who cares about their skin should be on the sunscreen bandwagon…black, white, coloured, purple, unicorns and everything in-between! Choose a sunscreen that is compatible with your skin type and use it every single day!

7. Keep it simple.

The simpler, the better. Reduce the number of products you use to no more than 5. Anything more than that and you’re clogging your pores which can cause break outs.

The above points have really made a huge difference in the overall health of my skin!


 
But, the crux of the matter is, unfortunately, there is no one-size-fits-all miracle cure for all our skincare concerns. It really is just a matter of trial and error and then consistency!
